A Book Definately Worth Reading
While in a former mining town near Lake Tahoe to investgate the disappearance of a movie actor, Frank and Joe become involved in a decades old feud between the town's youth. Before I read the book, I didn't expect it to be very good, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it well written and with an intriguing plot.

Chosen poems of Thomas Hardy
Published in Unknown Binding by Macmillan ()
Author: Thomas Hardy
Average review score:

A seemingly reflective work of quaint and nostalgic poetry.
Chosen Poems, compliled by Hardy himself later in life is an essential look at Hardy the poet. While Hardy the novelist spun tales of romance and intrigue, his poetry suggests a more reflective tone. The sentimental nature of most of his poems thrusts the reader into a mind coursing madly about lost loves, and the ancestrial rememberances of better times. The metaphors are thick and the syntax archaic to a modern ear, however the sing song nature of much of the rhyme and meter ushers those of us in generation X back to the day of green eggs and ham. Near the end of the 1978 edition edited by Francis Shapiro Puk Hardy's Epic Poem recounting the life of Napolean is added making that edition a more complete and fulfilling read. I recommend Thomas Hardy's Chosen Poems as a vehicle to transport the bored reader to a time of ideal notions and lofty reflections. Your time will be well spent and your vocabulary improved!

The Christmas Collection (Unabridged Selections)

Like a Christmas stocking full of goodies
What Naxos has done here is put together an anthology of Christmas poetry, musings and other Christmas fair to serve up a delightful listen. Starting with an ancient Christmas carol and even a recipe circa 1300 the listener is treated to poetry, thoughts and reflections from various authors on what Christmas is, and is not about. I have to admit it took me a while to get into this recording but once I did I found myself touched by the Christmas spirit. Indeed I actually bought this last year and saved it for this year's holiday season to listen to. Among the poetry and observations, there are also a few short stories, and evena play. As well interspersed throughout the readings are Christmas carols and classical Christmas music. Its a fine collection although its mostly for adults. In adition one truly must be a lover of English literature to fully appreciate this anthology; the overall theme of this after all has to do with Christmas time in the 19th and early 20th centuries. I would highly recommended if one enjoys works and authors from these time periods. Its great to listen to with a cup of cocoa, or exotic coffee. This book contains 2 CDs and is read by a variety of readers. merry Christmas.

Christology of the Later Fathers
Published in Paperback by Westminster John Knox Press (December, 1995)
Author: Edward R. Hardy
Average review score:

Excellent study of Christ
Athanasius, Gregory of Nazianzus, and Gregory of Nyssa are brillliant theologians of their time, and the comments and clarifications by the editor help to make their writings more comprehensible. This is a thorough study and analysis of Christ, probing the questions surrounding the Incarnation and refuting the heresies of that day and age.

Good for those interested in geneaology
This is a great book for people interested in their family history, especially if they think their family is from the Southern States. It has names, dates of marriages, deaths, and births, and places of marriages, deaths, and births of hundreds of people. It is very informative and well documented, and not too difficult to decipher. This can be very helpful.

The Crimson Flame: The Hardy Boys Mystery Stories
Published in Turtleback by Demco Media (July, 1992)
Author: Franklin W. Dixon
Average review score:

One of the Best Paperbacks
This book is one of the best paperbacks in the series. It starts off with Frank and Joe breaking up an attempted mugging on a New York subway. It turns out that the mugger is after the victim's newly purchased ruby, called "The Crimson Flame". The victim is a prominent rancher in Arizona. Soon after arriving in Arizona, the victim asks the Hardys to investigate strange events at his ranch. Here they encounter sinister ranchhands and a suspicious staff, and a clue from a hat they find takes them to Thailand and then back to Arizona where they solve the mystery. I don't want to give away too much. Numerous encounters with the criminals happen throughout the book, and the action is non-stop. Their friends, Chet and Biff are in the story, but they play no significant role in the investigation other than be ranch hands at the victim's friend's ranch (and that's not saying much). Highly recommended, great read from start to finish.

Cross Stitch Gifts for Baby and Nursery
Published in Hardcover by New Holland Pub Ltd (December, 1999)
Author: Sandra Hardy
Average review score:

An essential one for all the mothers-to-be!
Surprisingly few cross-stitch books focus on babies but fortunately this is one of them. As both a godmother of a 1-year-old toddler and an expectant mom myself I found this book helpful when deciding what to stitch as a gift or for your own baby's wardrobe and nursery.

Whether you are an almost beginner like me or "a semiprofessional" there's a lot to choose from simple designs for socks and t-shirts to lively wall decorations and celebration samples. There are also suggestions for varying and adapting these clear and beautiful designs, which broadens their usability. All the charts are colored and matched with DMC threads, added with easy-to-follow instructions.

I would have given even five stars if there had been more of these baby designs - now something over 30 simply isn't enough for an enthusiastic cross-stitcher!

Review of The Dead Season
I thought this was a very interesting book. As far as Casefiles go, it was ok. It was however a little different then some of the other casefiles. Surprise ending, and theme of the 20's. Very good.
